Focus & Get More Done Tool

Helping students pick a task, work with focus, and recognize procrastination patterns

Introduction

The Focus & Get More Done Tool is a simple, powerful resource that helps students break through procrastination and build momentum. Whether they’re overwhelmed by academic pressure, struggling with goal setting, or feeling foggy from lack of sleep, this tool offers a clear path forward. Inspired by the Pomodoro Technique, it teaches students how to choose a task, limit distractions, and work in short, focused bursts — all while celebrating progress along the way. The Pomodoro Technique is powerful because it turns big, overwhelming tasks into manageable 25‑minute bursts, helping students stay focused and build momentum through small wins. Its built‑in breaks support emotional regulation and make productivity feel achievable rather than exhausting.

How to Use It

This tool works well in classrooms, counseling sessions, or home study spaces. Here’s how to guide students through it:

1. Pick a Task to Focus On

Start by helping students name one specific task:

  • “Write the first paragraph of my essay”
  • “Finish five math problems”
  • “Clean out my backpack”

Prompt: “What’s one thing you’ve been avoiding that you could do in 25 minutes?”

2. Limit All Distractions

Encourage students to mute notifications, clear their space, and let others know they’re focusing.

Prompt: “What usually distracts you? Let’s make a plan to pause those things.”

3. Set a Timer for 25 Minutes

Challenge students to work with focus and curiosity:

  • Use a visual timer or app
  • Frame it as a game: “Let’s see how much you can get done!”

Prompt: “Ready to race the clock? You’ve got this.”

4. Take a 5-Minute Break & Celebrate

After the timer ends, invite students to stretch, breathe, or grab water — and name what they accomplished.

Prompt: “What did you finish? What’s one thing you’re proud of?”

5. Repeat

Students can repeat the cycle for longer tasks or use it to build a study rhythm.

Prompt: “Want to go again? Or pause and come back later?”
