How One Student Reclaimed Confidence Through Self-Care

By the time homework was finally finished, it was already late. Again.

This student—like so many—was juggling school assignments, extracurriculars, friendships, and the quiet pressure to “do well” at everything. Their days were full. Their evenings were packed. And somewhere in between responsibilities and expectations, something important had slipped through the cracks:

Taking care of themselves.

At first, the student didn’t recognize that they weren’t keeping up with self-care: like doing things they enjoy, getting enough sleep or taking breaks from homework to rest. It wasn’t until they checked in with a Clayful Coach during “Clayful Time” - a dedicated time set aside in the classroom by teachers for students to do a 10-20 minute wellness check-in with a Clayful Coach.

The Check-In That Changed Everything

Through the coach’s insightful questions, and space in the classroom to reflect, the student recognized that their lack of self-care was catching up to them. So, they set a goal to make it more of a focus, despite their busy schedule.

They were shown the Self Care Toolbox—a simple, practical resource designed to help students build small, sustainable habits that protect their energy and well-being.

Next week during “Clayful Time” the coach provided accountability support by checking in on last week’s conversation and goal around self-care.

the coach asked: how's self care been going for you? what's the last thing you did for yourself that made you feel good?

The student then shared something that might seem small but was actually powerful:

the student responded: I've been going to bed earlier and make some time to watch a show with my friends at the end of the day, which has been really nice!

Going to bed earlier. Making time to relax with friends.

That was it. No dramatic life overhaul. No productivity hacks. Just intentional, consistent care.

But the impact? Bigger than they expected.

The coach didn’t just celebrate the habit. They helped the student connect it to something deeper.

the coach asked: since doing these things for yourself how do you feel like that is affecting you showing up for school, practice, etc?

That question invited reflection—not just action.

And that’s when the shift became clear.

the student responded: I feel more confident in my abilities to be productive, especially as I have something to look forward to.

Read that again.

Not just “less tired.” Not just “more relaxed.” More confident.

Self-care wasn’t making them less ambitious. It was making them stronger.

They ended the conversation expressing:

I'm really looking forward to the break next week so I can really take some time for myself.

I still have some assignments, but I'm sure I will be able to complete them without issues.

Can you feel that confidence in them to continue with self-care and complete their school work without issues?

Can you imagine if every student experienced that confidence & care for themselves?

Why This Worked

This transformation didn’t happen because someone told the student to “try harder.”

It happened because their school decided to partner with Clayful.

Here’s what made the difference:

1. Space for wellness carved out in the classroom

For this transformation to occur, it didn’t require the student to reach out for support on their own. Sometimes we don’t know that we need help or what can help.

Instead, through their school engaging with “Clayful Time” - a dedicated time set aside in the classroom by teachers for students to do a 10-20 minute wellness check-in with a Clayful Coach - the student was able to reflect on their current state and needs, which gave them the insight to focus on self-care.

This allowed the student to receive proactive support before their lack of self-care turned into a bigger issue.

2. Real humans

Clayful coaches are trained, trusted adults who ask insightful questions, listen deeply and respond thoughtfully.

The coach didn’t judge the student for feeling overwhelmed. They didn’t give advice or tell them what they “should” do.

They helped the student reflect on what they need, so that they could get their needs met.

3. Practical tools

The Self Care Toolbox invites students to choose practical behaviors that:

  • Reduce stress

  • Build positive momentum

  • Strengthen confidence

4. Follow-up and reflection

The real magic wasn’t just setting the goal.

It was checking in.

By carving out “Clayful Time” in the classroom to check-in with wellness coaches, it provides a container for accountability so that the student has a reason to practice the growth areas identified in the session, try the tools & have something to report back on.

When the coach asked how self-care had impacted school and practice, it helped the student connect effort to outcome.

That connection builds motivation to keep doing what’s working.

When students see that their choices directly affect their confidence and performance, they keep going. That’s self-responsibility & resilience!

What This Means for Other Students

If you’re reading this and thinking: “I don’t have time for self-care” that’s usually the sign you need it most.

Self-care doesn’t have to be long routines, expensive products or hours of free time. Sometimes it’s: going to bed 30 minutes earlier, turning off your phone at night, watching a show with friends or taking a real break without guilt

Small habits create big shifts. If you’re not sure where to start, Clayful is right there. You can connect with a trained coach in 60 seconds, on any device. Whether you’re overwhelmed, stressed, confused, or just curious—no topic is too big, no topic too small.

The Bigger Picture

At Clayful, we partner with schools to help entire communities build mental strength.

When students gain confidence, behavior improves. When behavior improves, learning increases. When students feel supported, resilience grows.

And when self-care becomes normalized, students stop seeing rest as weakness—and start seeing it as fuel.

This student’s story is just one example of what’s possible when access is easy and support is human.
