Make Better Deicisions with the Habit Breaking Tool

Breaking a habit can feel frustrating—especially when it seems to happen automatically, before you even realize it. The Habit Breaking Tool gives students a simple, practical way to pause, reset, and make more intentional choices using the 3D Strategy: Delay, Distract, Decide. Instead of relying on willpower alone, this tool helps students slow down their reactions, build self-awareness, and create space for change—one small moment at a time.

How to Use the Habit Breaking Tool

This tool is easy to use anywhere—during class, at home, or in the moment when a habit shows up. Here’s how to guide students through it:

Delay:
Encourage students to pause when they notice the habit coming up.
Have them tell themselves: “I don’t have to do this right now. I’ll wait 5 minutes.”
Use this time to take a few deep breaths and check in with how they’re feeling.

Distract:
Next, guide them to shift their attention for a few minutes. They can:

  • Get a drink of water
  • Text a friend
  • Step outside
  • Listen to music
  • Doodle, stretch, or play a quick game

This helps interrupt the automatic pattern and creates space to choose differently.

Decide:
After the pause and distraction, invite students to reflect:

  • “Do I still want to do this?”
  • “Or do I want to try something different?”

This step builds decision-making skills and puts them back in control.

This process may only take a few minutes, but it can make a big difference in helping students shift habits over time.

Benefits of the Habit Breaking Tool for Students

Using this tool regularly helps students:

Build Self-Awareness:
Students begin to notice patterns and triggers behind their habits.

Create a Pause Between Feeling & Action:
They learn they don’t have to act on every impulse right away.

Strengthen Decision-Making Skills:
Practicing “Delay, Distract, Decide” helps students feel more in control of their choices.

Reduce Unwanted Behaviors Over Time:
Small interruptions to habits can lead to meaningful, lasting change.

Extra Tips to Make It Stick

To deepen the impact of this tool, encourage students to:

  • Get curious about their habits — noticing when, where, and why they happen
  • Replace the habit with something that helps in the moment
  • Start small — change one part (time, place, or frequency)
  • Ask for support from a coach, trusted adult, or friend
  • Expect slip-ups — they’re part of learning, not failure
  • Celebrate progress — even small wins matter
